Come
celebrate the Fourth of July Annual Walking Tour!

Celebrate a native son
As Fourth of July weekend explodes with events that celebrate national pride, you can head over to Fox Point to commemorate a patriot from Providence, George M. Cohan. As a songwriter and performer, Cohan penned long-lasting jingles and set the standard for Broadway musicals. This weekend, Cohan will be honored at two events. On Friday, join local dignitaries and musicians near Cohan’s birthplace at Wickenden and Governor streets. The intersection will be renamed “The George M. Cohan Plaza” and a sculpture of Cohan will be unveiled. On Saturday, the Rhode Island Historical Society will offer a walking tour of Fox Point, followed by a lecture on the life of Cohan and a screening of the “Yankee Doodle Dandy.” The day’s events will culminate with entertainment and fireworks on the newly renovated waterfront at India Point Park.

LOCATION: Corner of Wickenden and Governor streets, Providence. Friday, July 3. Ceremony and unveiling begins at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, July 4. Tours begin at 11 a.m.; $10 tickets; reservations requested by calling (401) 331-8575 ext. 45. Lecture begins at 2 p.m. at 75 John St., Providence. Film screened immediately following. Fireworks, music and celebration at India Point Park begin at 6 p.m.

Creativity and freedom, celebrated
For a patriotic theme that ignites the fireworks of imagination, join Chabot Fine Art Gallery for a preview of its latest exhibit, “Freedom of Expression.” Much in the way our country’s population thrives in diversity, the tools of the artists in the exhibit vary widely, from pre-cast sculpture to oil on canvas. The show features works by Felix de Weldon, Domine Ragosta, Edwin Wilwayco, Steve Barylick and founder of the gallery Lee Chabot. The exhibit also highlights the work of Whitmore Boogaerts in the Sculpture Courtyard.

The right to assembly, indeed
Nothing says independence like blocking traffic and marching right down the middle of the street like you own it. Well, every Fourth of July the towns of Bristol, Glocester and Cumberland do just that with their annual Independence Day parades. Bristol’s 224th Fourth of July Parade is the oldest parade in the country. Visitors are encouraged to arrive before 8 a.m. to secure a good place at this hugely popular event. Glocester’s 83rd annual Ancients and Horribles Parade is billed as “nothing is sacred,” with locals spoofing political heavyweights and a tradition of characters, costumes and camaraderie. Finally, Cumberland’s Arnold Mill’s July 4th Celebration will showcase costumes, the Shriner’s marchers, bands, floats and music entertainment.

LOCATION:
Bristol Parade: Starting from Chestnut and Hope streets, Bristol. Friday, July 4; parade at 10:30 a.m.

Remember the country through a city

As the weekend celebrates the Independence of the United States, join the Newport Historical Society for a special open house event highlighting properties that have been restored and improved for continued generations. Enjoy the tour and stay for an evening of revelry in the city.

LOCATION: Newport Historical Society, 82 Touro St., Newport. Friday, July 3, 4 to 6 p.m. $40 in advance; $50 day of event; $25 members; children under 12 are free. For more information or reservations call (401) 846-0813.
